Updated photos of a few of my Hostas

Here are a few updated photos of my hostas.  They did very nicely this year.

This one had a great year, having noticeable growth this year.

And here’s my big one, and the yellowish one it is swallowing up beside it:

My husband swears he will help me transplant it next spring before the leaves come out.  I file that promise under, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”  LOL  But I hope he means it this time.  The yellow one didn’t even make seeds this fall (it’s Nov 2010, I am posting this late).  So I fear if we don’t move it next spring it won’t make it.  The last time I measured the big one on the left it had a spread of over 10 feet across.  It is BIG.

Hostas and Irises coming up

My hostas closest to the well house door always seem to come up the fastest each spring.

view from the top:

I really should have broken off last years bloom stems, but never really felt up to going around them all and doing it.

The ones on the other side of the well house are always a little slower to start.
But you can see them on each side, and my Irises in the middle:

My “volunteer” hostas:

I wish I had some help, I would love to transfer these to a location of their own.

These are the two large ones I have near the building:

The one on the right is a yellowish version.  The one on the left is a huge dark hosta or “blue” as they are sometimes called.
I don’t know the variety names of any of them.  I bought them many many years ago and didn’t keep the labels. Now I sort of wish I had.
The one on the left has a leaf spread of over 8 feet wide the last time I measured.  I wonder how big it will be this year.
It is gradually choking out the yellow.  I hope it survives.  Nobody seems interested in helping me move the yellow. Hopefully I can convince someone before it is completely over taken.  It’s very frustrating no longer being able to do these things myself.

This is a close up of the dark one:

I love how the stalks look purple as they start up.

July 6th, 2009 – Hostas

Here are some of my hostas in bloom, near the well house:

Now for the sad situation to the right…  LOL
This hosta was a little volunteer that sprouted up on it’s own.  I could not believe it bloomed so much this year.  This was only it’s 2nd or perhaps 3rd year.  Unfortunately it is not big enough to take out the surrounding weeds near it like my other hostas do on their own.  And I haven’t been able to get anyone to do it for me.  So you can hardly see the plant in the photo, but you can make out three of the bloom stalks.

I love to take photos of my hostas.  I like to get them coming up out of the ground in the spring, and then all the way through the season.  I usually take lots of macro type shots of them.  But this year I haven’t been able to do much of that, and I was having to shoot these from a distance.  And I was lamenting that fact when my husband asked if I wanted him to go and try to get some close ups for me.  Of course I jumped at the chance and said “YES!”  He said, “Well I can’t guarantee how they will come out, but I’ll try.”
And he got one that is just beautiful.  Best shot we got the whole day of anything we photographed, in my opinion.  Here it is:
