Maple tree scar

Most people have seen scars on trees.  Someone ties something around them, forgets about it, and before you know it you’ve got a ring around a tree where someone left a wire or a string, etc.  Here’s an example in one of the large maple trees on the property.

What I thought made this interesting, is just how far up it is.
Below is the same tree, wider view, with the damaged ring circled in pink:

It’s pretty far up now, eh?
It makes me wonder which of my family members did it years ago.  If I had to guess, I’d say my grandfather perhaps.  Or maybe my dad, if maple trees grow that fast.  I really don’t know.   I just thought it was neat.  I’ve seen things like that in trees before.  But I don’t believe I’ve ever noticed one up that high.

  1. I’m sure it was tied on low, when the tree was short. Probably just a kid playing, etc. This area of the property was all woods before the late 1970’s. I don’t know a lot about tress and I am not sure how fast maple trees grow. I think they grow slow enough that it had to have been my grandfather or someone further back in my family. Because the tree has been really tall for as long as I can remember.

  2. After I posted that reply, I got more curious and remembered some old photos I scanned awhile back, so I went looking. I found a photo of my Dad in 1977 with the tree in the background. My guess was right, it was way too tall already to have been something he did, even as a kid. Maybe my Grandpa or Great-grandpa, perhaps.
